The first 30 seconds
- 1Don't brake hard. Lift off the throttle and let the car slow naturally.
- 2Grip the wheel firmly — a front flat will pull noticeably to that side.
- 3Hazards on. Indicate toward the kerb early.
- 4Aim for somewhere safe: side street, lay-by, hard shoulder, petrol station forecourt.
- 5Stop on level, flat ground if possible — never on a hill.
If you're on a red route
Red routes (signed with single or double red lines) prohibit stopping at any time. But TfL specifically permits stopping in genuine emergencies — a flat tyre qualifies. The car will not be ticketed if the breakdown is real and you call recovery promptly.
If you're in a bus lane
Stopping in a bus lane during operating hours costs you a £160 PCN (£80 if paid within 14 days). Emergencies are a defence — keep photos of the flat tyre as evidence. If you're between 7pm and 7am (or whatever the lane's operating hours are), no fine applies.
If you're on the M25, A2 or A40
- 1Get to the hard shoulder, lay-by or emergency refuge area — even on three wheels at 20 mph, this is safer than stopping in a live lane.
- 2Exit the car on the LEFT-hand side (passenger side).
- 3Climb over the barrier and stand on the verge, well behind the car.
- 4Do NOT attempt to change the wheel yourself on a motorway. Highway Code rule 274.
- 5Call 999 if you're in a live lane and unable to move. Otherwise call recovery.
Once you're safely stopped
- 1Get all passengers out on the kerb side, away from traffic.
- 2Take a photo of the tyre — useful for insurance or fine appeals.
- 3Locate your tyre size on the sidewall: e.g. 225/45 R18 95Y.
- 4Note your exact location: postcode, nearest junction or motorway marker post.
- 5Call a mobile tyre service. We're typically with you in 20–35 minutes anywhere in Central London.

Don't try to change the wheel if…
- You're on a motorway, dual carriageway or red route.
- The car is on a slope or uneven surface.
- It's dark and you have no high-vis jacket or warning triangle.
- The damage is on the road-side of the car.
- Your car has run-flats and you can drive 50 miles at 50 mph instead.
- Your car doesn't have a spare (most modern BMW, Mini, Mercedes, MG — check the boot).
