What's included in a proper repair
A British Standard BS AU 159f repair is the only repair that's road-legal in the UK. It must include:
- 1Removal of the tyre from the wheel (external 'plug-only' repairs are illegal in the UK).
- 2Inspection of the inner liner for hidden damage.
- 3A combination plug-and-patch (mushroom plug) inserted from the inside.
- 4Re-balancing of the wheel after repair.
- 5Re-fitting and pressure check.
When repair is impossible (and you need a new tyre)
A puncture cannot be repaired under BS AU 159 if any of these apply:
- Damage is within 25mm of the sidewall edge (the 'shoulder').
- The puncture hole is larger than 6mm.
- The tyre was driven flat or below 15 PSI.
- There are multiple punctures within 100mm of each other.
- The tread depth is already under 1.6mm (it's getting replaced soon anyway).
- It's a run-flat that has been driven flat.
New tyre cost for comparison
If a repair isn't possible, you're looking at the cost of a new tyre plus fitting:
- Budget tyre (Linglong, Wanli) for a 17-inch hatch: £55–£80 fitted
- Mid-range (Hankook, Falken) same size: £85–£120 fitted
- Premium (Michelin, Continental, Pirelli) same size: £130–£200 fitted
- Run-flat premium for an executive saloon: £180–£340 fitted
Hidden costs to watch for
Valve replacement
A rubber valve costs £3–£5. Most BS-compliant repairs include this; some don't. Ask before booking.
TPMS sensor reset
If your car has direct TPMS (BMW, Mercedes, many newer Fords), the sensor may need re-syncing. £10–£25 extra at some chains; usually included with a mobile fitter.
Wheel balancing
Should be included. If a fitter quotes you 'repair only' and charges balancing extra (£8–£15), they're not following BS AU 159.

Is it worth claiming on insurance?
Almost never. A puncture is below most policies' £150–£250 excess, and using your no-claims for a £35 repair will cost more in premium than the repair itself. Pay out of pocket and move on.
